What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is not just a new trend or only about nutrition, diets, massages or oils. Ayurveda is more! It’s the wisdom of life. Ayus means life and Veda is knowledge. So Ayurveda is the knowledge of life – the the science of life. It’s an ancient body of knowledge from India over 5000 years old. Ayurvedic Medicine covers different areas of health and uses diet, herbs, lifestyle, ayurvedic body treatment, and behavioral/mental/emotional modifications to prevent or heal illness. It’s the oldest system of natural medicine and used for prevention and curing. It is an orientation for life, very intuitive, liberating and flexible. It is about taking responsibility for your life and helps to remember again who you really are and what your needs are.

Ayurveda means:

Ayurveda = The science of life

Ayus = life (often also health)

Veda = science, the knowledge

Ayurveda is much more than a medical system. It sees itself as a holistic science, which also includes spiritual and philosophical components:

The history of Ayurveda in brief:

Ayurveda: Traditional Indian Medicine (TIM)

Ayurveda is based on 3 pillars:

Prevention is a supporting pillar in Ayurveda! And personal growth also plays an important role.

There are 3 basic principles:

The teachings of the elements
The teachings of the 3 Doshas (bioenergies)
The concept of body-mind and soul

With the 5 elements ether, air, fire, water, and earth, the practical application of Ayurveda begins through intuitive sensing. We are all part of nature and the 5 elements can be found in our body and mind in a metaphorical sense.

The basic law of Ayurveda: like strengthens like; opposites cancel each other out.

Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention.

In our modern world, it is applicable in all areas of life. Whether you are in the process of starting your new company or business, want to improve your health, your life, want to change your diet, or to develop personally or want to improve your relationships. The list can go on and on. There really isn’t a single area of life where you can’t apply the benefits of Ayurveda!

What is Ayurveda NOT?

Ayurveda is NOT a religion, dogma or belief. It is NOT a rigid or dogmatic view of life. It is NOT a rigid, dogmatic system of healing and medicine. It is NOT judgmental and does NOT put you on in a box. It is NOT a social construct. And most of all, it is NOT complicated and overwhelming.

How to start with Ayurveda? If you are new to Ayurveda then the first step would be to determine your body constitution based on the three Doshas Vata, Pitta, Kapha. Knowing your body constitution is the foundation of your journey or your starting point.
