How Ayurvedic Medicine can benefit Highly Sensitive People

Ayurvedic Medicine can help you physically AND emotionally, mentally, and spiritually as a highly sensitive person (HSP). How? Stay tuned and continue reading.

Before you continue reading did you know that I’ve developed a Self-Test that will reveal if you’re a highly sensitive person? Take the Self-Test here

And now back to Ayurveda and HSP’s. I experienced Ayurveda the first time more than 15 years ago when I was navigating a stormy time in my life. Ever since, Ayurveda has become part of my life. Because it helped me so much as a highly sensitive woman, I’ve continued to educate myself and learn and integrate it into my life. And today, I’m happy to share this ancient wisdom with you because what helped me might also help you and why not sharing????

What’s Ayurveda?

For people who don’t know, Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word (Sanskrit is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of attested human languages).

Ayus means life and Veda is knowledge. So Ayurveda is the knowledge of life-the the science of life. It’s an ancient body of knowledge from India over 5000 years old.

Ayurveda isn’t a religion, dogma, or faith. The practices are helping you connect with your true nature and essence and show you to live in harmony with yourself, the seasons, and all of life.

It’s the oldest system of natural medicine and used for prevention and curing. It’s older than Chinese Medicine or around the same time. Isn’t it incredible-over 5000 years old? How much wisdom it carries. It always thrilled.

Ayurveda is based on the 5 elements: Air, space, water, fire, and earth.

Everything in nature is made up of the five elements. If we combine these elements together in the correct way, they’ll make up the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). The 3 doshas are biological and physiological forces/ energies in our body. You can find these bioenergies in EVERYTHING- means in your body system, in nature, in the rhythm of the seasons, the times of the day, and the moon cycles. And that’s what we use for our overall health, in our relationships and business! More to come about this another time.

Ayurvedic Medicine covers different areas of health and uses diet, herbs, lifestyle, ayurvedic body treatment, and behavioral/mental/emotional modifications to prevent or heal illness.

When do we suffer?

We suffer when we become over-identified or attached to emotions and/or thought. But also when we misuse our 5 senses such as hearing, seeing, smelling, touching, tasting. Ayurveda gives you support to suffer less. You learn through Ayurveda ways how to live your full potential and come into your empowerment without having to correct or adapt. It is very liberating.

What does Ayurveda for a highly sensitive person?

You might have heard that as a highly sensitive person, the nervous system is more activated. We notice changes easier and are sensitive to feel what’s in the environment. Ayurveda helped me to find ways and tools to become more grounded and balanced. Especially when I felt overwhelmed or overstimulated.

And right now, where every culture, society, and the world is going through major changes, chaos, and shifts, Ayurveda can be a lifesaver. Because as a highly sensitive person, you experience what other people are feeling and may be suffering. You feel the collective pain, anger, and fear. Ayurveda provides a lifestyle that supports you to get back to an inner feeling of groundedness, balance, and a sense of inner peace. It helps to reconnect with consciousness and pure BEING. It also liberates yourself every day in little ways and periodically in bigger ways.

Your body is connected

There’s a connection between digestion and emotions for highly sensitive people. As highly sensitive people are so deeply feelers, Ayurveda is brilliant in giving practices that show you how to digest what you feel, hear, see, touch, and eat. It’s normal that you try to digest the whole environment. Often you might be triggered by something in an unhealthy way. Therefore it’s beneficial to work on awareness and the trigger on your overall digestion and emotions. It would calm your overall body down.

In summary, Ayurveda is Medicine for our consciousness because it addresses the whole person- the body-mind-soul. Ayurveda shows how to live with the cycles of nature and live in harmony with the law of nature (moon, sun, wake-up time, go-to bedtime, daytime cycles, seasons…). If we violate the law of nature, unconsciously or consciously, we create suffering. And with the help of Ayurveda, you can learn how to create more peace, joy, happiness, empowerment, and success in all areas of your life.
