Finding Strength in Nature During Menopause

Navigating menopause can feel like traveling on an unfamiliar path, but it can also be a profound journey of self-discovery and renewal. During this transitional phase, we often search for sources of orientation, strength, and stability, much like looking for a lighthouse in a storm.

For me, nature has always been the grounding force, mainly the calming and strengthening companionship of trees and the uplifting quality of flowers and herbs.

Sometimes, I can't hold back and need to hug a tree, pour all my love into it, and feel the life force, stability, and vitality of nature in return.

Even as a child, I had a special connection with trees and nature.

I would climb trees and sometimes spend hours there. I would sit in apple and cherry trees, enjoying the simple pleasure of picking and eating fresh fruit straight from the branches. In these moments, I felt safe, calm, and well-held by trees and nature.

.

I fondly remember these wonderful experiences with nature.

But why am I telling you this, and what does it have to do with menopause?

Well, Menopause is a time of transition—a phase where we often don't know our body anymore and who we are. It often feels like a storm and whirlwind of changes. On the other hand, it is a beautiful time to rediscover ourselves and connect more deeply with who we are if we walk the path with consciousness. For me, this stage of life also means returning to my roots, (re)connecting with the sources of strength, calmness, vitality, wisdom, and bliss within that have always been there, and coming back home.

Nature, especially trees, has always been a symbol of stability, growth, and renewal for me. Amid the changes that menopause brings—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual—I find deep peace, strength, and vitality in nature. Hugging a tree feels like having a dialogue with nature: I offer my love and gratitude, and in return, nature gives me energy, stability, and a sense of connection.

Menopause invites us to pause and reflect on our lives—on what and which experiences and stories have shaped us, what gives us strength, and what we are ready to let go of. For me, reconnecting with my childhood experiences with trees is part of this process. It reminds me that change is not something to fear but rather a natural part of life’s cycle—just like the seasons in nature.

Perhaps menopause is not just a time to say goodbye to one phase of life but also an invitation to reconnect more deeply with nature and ourselves. Think about it!

Menopause is an ending and a beginning simultaneously..The ending of the reproductive years and beginning of a beautiful new chapter in life!

Connecting with Ayurveda

The wisdom of Ayurveda emphasizes living in harmony with nature and recognizing the interconnectedness of all life forms. Trees, with their deep roots and expansive branches, show balance—a key principle in Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, balance means keeping your body, mind, and spirit in harmony. This happens when the three forces in your body—Vata (linked to the element space and air), Pitta (linked to fire and water), and Kapha (linked to earth and water)—are in the right proportions for you. These forces, called doshas, come from the five natural elements (space, air, fire, water, and earth) and control how your body and mind work- it governs physiological and psychological functions. An imbalance in the doshas leads to symptoms and disease, while balance promotes health and well-being. Therefore, the focus is to consistently bring balance back to the body and mind, thereby experiencing health and well-being.

During menopause, understanding and applying Ayurvedic principles helps ease the transition and support reconnecting with our true nature, inner strength, stability, vitality, wisdom, and bliss and returning home. Ayurveda encourages us to make dietary and lifestyle changes that align with our unique body-mind type and natural rhythms so that we find stability and vitality, much like we find while hugging a tree.
